Is Form-Finding the Be-All and End-All?

 Performance can generate a compelling shape. Architecture begins when that shape is tested against life, place, construction, and meaning.

Architecture schools and increasingly professional studios are fascinated by form-finding. There is good reason for this.

A membrane settles into equilibrium. A hanging chain describes a line of pure tension which, when inverted, suggests an efficient compression structure. An environmental model adjusts a façade in response to heat, daylight, or wind. Instead of beginning with a preconceived silhouette, the architect establishes forces and constraints, then allows a form to emerge.

The process can feel almost revelatory. The computer calculates; the model responds; the geometry appears. Yet this seduction invites a difficult question:

If a form is structurally or environmentally optimal, has architecture already been achieved?

No. Form-finding is one of architecture’s most powerful instruments, but it is not the discipline’s final purpose. Architecture remains an unruly synthesis of engineering, use, economics, memory, politics, beauty, and human experience. No single procedure, not even an exceptionally intelligent one, can reconcile all those demands by itself.

What Form-Finding Does Exceptionally Well

Form-finding replaces arbitrary shape-making with a disciplined search. Rather than asking, “What shape do I want?” the designer asks, “What configuration can these materials, forces, and boundary conditions sustain?”

Frei Otto’s work remains exemplary. Beginning in the 1950s, he used physical models to investigate tensile forms and test their behavior. Although his collaborators later became early users of computers for structural analysis, the essential geometric information still came from physical form-finding experiments. His work joined ecological economy, material restraint, engineering intelligence, and architectural expression. The form did not merely illustrate the structure; it arose through structural inquiry. The Pritzker Architecture Prize’s account of Otto’s work documents this close relationship among models, computation, lightness, and material efficiency.

That legacy matters even more today. Buildings consume resources, alter microclimates, and persist for decades. Under those conditions, designing an extravagant shape and asking engineers to make it stand is becoming increasingly difficult to defend.

Contemporary simulations can expose buildings to solar radiation, airflow, thermal behavior, structural loading, embodied-carbon limits, and patterns of occupation. Used intelligently, such analysis can help architects reject wasteful gestures early, when change remains possible.

Here lies form-finding’s real power: it makes consequences visible.

A roof can reveal how it spans. A façade can register solar exposure. A structural system can communicate lightness or mass through its actual behavior. Form begins to disclose what the building does, not simply what its designer wants it to resemble.

But Performance Never Speaks Alone

Problems emerge when the performance model is mistaken for the whole architectural problem.

Every form-finding exercise begins with selected variables. Someone decides what will be measured, what will be optimized, and what will remain outside the model. A structure optimized for minimum material may be expensive to fabricate. A façade optimized for annual energy demand may be difficult to maintain. A digitally differentiated envelope may perform impressively in simulation while depending on complex components that local workers cannot readily repair.

The supposedly “optimal” form is therefore optimal only in relation to a defined objective.

Change the objective and the answer changes.

This is the tyranny of the measurable: not that measurement is undesirable, but that measurable criteria can quietly displace everything more difficult to quantify. Dignity, familiarity, belonging, cultural memory, delight, and spiritual resonance rarely arrive as clean numerical inputs. Their resistance to calculation does not make them irrelevant.

Architecture fails when people become residual variables in a technically elegant equation.

A perfectly optimized space may still feel oppressive. A structurally daring building may offer poor acoustics, awkward circulation, or little sense of welcome. Even environmental performance can become narrowly theatrical: a conspicuous, responsive façade, perhaps while less visible questions of adaptability, repair, labor, and long-term stewardship receive inadequate attention.

The Sydney Opera House is often reduced to a tidy story about sails translated into concrete. Its actual development is more instructive.

Jørn Utzon’s competition scheme possessed an extraordinary sculptural conviction, but its roof geometry was not initially resolved for construction. Between 1958 and 1962, Utzon and the engineers of Ove Arup & Partners investigated parabolic, ellipsoidal, and eventually spherical geometries. Deriving the roof segments from a common sphere allowed repetitive formwork, prefabricated ribs, and a coherent tiling system. The project’s own historical account describes this as the “spherical solution”—a breakthrough that brought architectural intention and engineering logic into closer alignment. This was neither pure form-finding nor arbitrary sculpture. It was negotiation.

The desired architectural character preceded the final construction logic. Engineering research then transformed that aspiration into a buildable geometric family. Cost, repetition, structure, fabrication, setting, and symbolism shaped the outcome together.

That is the more valuable lesson. Architecture frequently advances through feedback between a chosen intention and discovered constraints. Sometimes performance generates the initial form. At other times, analysis disciplines, revises, or even rescues an imaginative proposition.

Architecture Must Transcend the Brief—Responsibly

Architecture has obligations that exceed technical compliance. It shelters bodies, stages relationships, frames rituals, and gives durable form to collective values. People remember the temperature of a courtyard at dusk, the compression before entering a tall room, the sound of rain on a roof, or the way a wall catches late-afternoon light. Such experiences are not decorative additions applied after performance has been solved. They are part of performance in a fuller human sense.

Luis Barragán’s architecture is useful here precisely because its emotional force does not depend on formal complexity. Plain walls, carefully judged openings, vivid color, water, shadow, and silence can generate an atmosphere more powerful than a highly articulated computational surface.

Barragán’s position was not an argument against technique. It was an argument against confusing technical adequacy with architectural completeness.

To “transcend the program” should not mean ignoring budgets, users, codes, or environmental responsibilities. It means satisfying those requirements while discovering possibilities the brief could not fully anticipate. The architect’s task is not simply to solve a list of problems. It is to understand which problems matter, which values conflict, and what kind of life the completed work should make possible.

The Tetra Architecture Test

Rather than treating form-finding as the master principle, architects can test a proposal through four interdependent concerns. This four-test of function and meaning is a working framework to help frame or assess an architecture, not a universal canon.

Firmness

Does the building stand safely and use material intelligently? Are its structural and environmental claims supported by evidence? Can its components be constructed, maintained, adapted, and eventually disassembled?

Form-finding is especially powerful here, but even firmness extends beyond initial optimization into durability, repair, and resilience.

Commodity

Does the building genuinely support its occupants?

Plans, sections, circulation, acoustics, accessibility, privacy, flexibility, and comfort must be judged through lived use rather than diagrammatic elegance. A formally coherent building that frustrates everyday occupation has solved the wrong problem.

Context

How does the work respond to climate, terrain, culture, history, labor, and the existing community?

Context is more than visual compatibility. It includes what a building displaces, whose resources it consumes, which skills it supports, and whether its construction strengthens or weakens local capacity.

Delight

Does the architecture offer more than competent enclosure?

Delight may arise from proportion, light, material, sequence, surprise, quietness, or recognition. It need not be spectacular. Indeed, some of the most moving buildings appear modest until one inhabits them.

These four concerns are not separate boxes to be checked. Each alters the others. Structural firmness can become delight. Context can reshape commodity. A beautiful material may prove environmentally indefensible. An efficient geometry may obstruct use. Architecture emerges through the negotiation.

So, Is Form-Finding the Be-All and End-All?

No, but dismissing it would be equally mistaken.

Form-finding can reveal structural possibilities the unaided imagination might miss. It can expose environmental consequences, reduce material waste, and replace empty formalism with disciplined experimentation. At its best, it teaches humility: the architect listens to forces, materials, and conditions rather than simply imposing a signature.

Still, an equilibrium shape cannot tell us what a community values. An optimization routine cannot decide which memories deserve preservation. A simulation cannot determine whether a room feels dignified, whether a threshold creates welcome, or whether a building gives more to its place than it takes.

Those remain architectural judgments. They demand evidence, certainly, but also experience, ethical awareness, intuition, and an educated act of will.

Form-finding helps us discover what a building could become. Architecture begins when we ask what that form is for, whom it serves, what it costs, how it belongs, and whether it deserves to endure.

Form-finding supplies constraints and possibilities. Architecture turns them into meaning.

From Buildings to Living Systems: An emerging professional paradigm in Architecture, urban design and planning

The future of architecture, urban design, and planning may no longer lie in perfecting isolated forms, but in shaping ecosystems that adapt, learn, and endure.

There was a time when the architect’s task seemed relatively clear: design the building, resolve the form, satisfy the client, and leave behind an object of function and beauty. Urban planners, in parallel, drew order onto territory. Urban designers stitched together the public realm. Each discipline had its domain, its methods, and its familiar claims to expertise. That model produced cities, districts, campuses, monuments, neighborhoods, and an enormous professional tradition worth respecting.

Still, that tradition is beginning to crack under the weight of the world we now inhabit.

Climate instability, ecological degradation, social fragmentation, infrastructure stress, digital governance, housing inequality, energy volatility, and the accelerating complexity of urban life have exposed something fundamental: the built environment is not a collection of isolated objects. It is a dense, restless, interdependent system. Buildings alter microclimates. Streets shape public health. Land use reorganizes mobility, livelihoods, social inclusion, and environmental risk. Housing affects family structure, consumption patterns, political pressure, and energy demand. Nothing stands alone for long. The fantasy of the discrete architectural object has become increasingly difficult to defend.

This is where a new professional paradigm begins.

What if the role of the architect, planner, and urban designer evolves from designing individual artifacts to shaping ecosystems that adapt and learn? What if our real task is no longer the production of static form but the cultivation of living spatial systems capable of absorbing shock, responding to feedback, and improving over time? That shift would not be cosmetic. It would alter the intellectual foundation of the profession.

Under such a paradigm, space can no longer be treated as an empty container waiting to be arranged. Space becomes relational. It carries flows, frictions, signals, conflicts, and ecologies. A street is not merely a right-of-way; it is a social condenser, a heat corridor, a mobility interface, a site of informal exchange, a drainage problem, and sometimes a political battleground. A school is not just a building with classrooms; it is part of a learning ecology, a neighborhood anchor, a disaster shelter, a public health environment, and a symbol of institutional legitimacy. A housing project is not simply a matter of units and setbacks; it reorganizes transport costs, social ties, childcare patterns, environmental exposure, and access to opportunity.

Once that becomes clear, form itself must be reinterpreted.

Form is not just composition. It is not merely image, silhouette, typology, or aesthetic coherence. Form becomes an operational proposition. It is a framework through which social life, ecological processes, and technological systems interact. Good form, then, is not the most photogenic arrangement. It is the one most capable of accommodating change without collapse, of enabling human flourishing without ecological violence, and of remaining useful under conditions that are uncertain, unequal, and often unstable.

That is a harder standard. It is also a more honest one.

For too long, architecture has often behaved as though permanence were the highest virtue. Yet the world now punishes rigidity. Cities flood in places once considered safe. Infrastructure ages faster than budgets can keep up. Population patterns shift. Economies swing. Technologies appear, disappear, and rewire daily routines. Buildings designed as fixed answers to temporary assumptions quickly become burdens. Entire master plans harden into elegant irrelevance.

What is needed now is not less design, but more intelligent design. More adaptive design. More humble design.

This means the profession must move from authorship toward stewardship. The architect is no longer only a form-giver. The planner is no longer only a regulator of land uses. The urban designer is no longer only a curator of public space. All three become, in different ways, stewards of socio-spatial ecosystems. Their work is judged not only by what is built on opening day, but by what that intervention enables five, ten, or twenty years later. Does it deepen resilience or merely disguise vulnerability? Does it restore ecological function or simply offset damage with rhetoric? Does it widen access, dignity, and belonging, or does it deliver sophistication for the already comfortable? Does it learn from users, from climate, from maintenance, or from failure? Or does it remain frozen in the ego of its first sketch?

This is where the idea of learning systems becomes decisive.

A building, district, or urban corridor should not be treated as complete once the ribbon is cut. It should be understood as an evolving platform. Post-occupancy evaluation, environmental monitoring, community feedback, mobility data, maintenance patterns, and social use should all be treated as part of design intelligence rather than an afterthought. The project must speak back. It must reveal what it is actually doing, not merely what drawings promised it would do. That feedback should not embarrass the profession. It should educate it.

Yet one must be careful here. The language of smartness, adaptation, and learning can become a trap. Not every sensor produces wisdom. Not every dashboard improves judgment. Not every algorithm serves the public good. A learning ecosystem that relies on opaque systems, privatized data, or surveillance-heavy urban management may be adaptive in technical terms while becoming deeply unjust in political and ethical terms. A city can become more efficient and less humane at the same time. That is not progress. That is merely optimization without moral direction.

So the future professional must also become a critic of systems, not just a designer within them.

Who decides what counts as valuable data? Who benefits from adaptation? Who is monitored, displaced, priced out, or rendered legible only when convenient? Whose experience is treated as signal, and whose suffering is treated as noise? These are not side questions. They are central design questions. The ecosystem we shape is never purely physical. It is institutional, social, ecological, economic, and political all at once.

This, then, is the real enlargement of the profession. Not a fashionable expansion of jargon, but a deeper acceptance of reality.

The architect of the future may still draw buildings, certainly. The planner will still work with land use, regulation, transport, and infrastructure. The urban designer will still shape streets, squares, and urban form. None of those tasks disappear. What changes is the level of consciousness at which they are performed. The competent professional will no longer ask only, “Is this project beautiful, functional, and buildable?” Those questions remain necessary, but they are no longer sufficient. The stronger questions are these: What system does this intervention enter? What behaviors will it reinforce? What ecologies will it damage or restore? What dependencies will it create? What capacities will it unlock? How will it behave under stress? Can it evolve? Can it learn? Can it fail gracefully rather than catastrophically?

That is the threshold we are crossing.

The age of treating architecture as the design of isolated objects is not fully over, but it is no longer adequate. We are moving, slowly and unevenly, toward a discipline defined less by isolated masterpieces and more by the intelligence of the systems it helps shape. The future will not reward professions that only compose surfaces while ignoring consequences. It will reward those capable of working across scales, across time, and across the difficult terrain where ecology, technology, governance, and everyday life collide.

In that world, the architect is not diminished. The planner is not sidelined. The urban designer is not dissolved into abstraction. On the contrary, their responsibility becomes larger, heavier, and more consequential.

We will still design buildings. But that will not be enough.

We must learn to design the conditions through which life, place, and collective futures can continuously adapt, recover, and become more whole.

That is not the abandonment of architecture.

It is architecture growing up.

Can Cities Up our Quality of Living? Introducing the Urban Restorative Potential Scale (URPS)

You step off the bus into a bustling plaza, and for a moment, the cacophony of horns and chatter fades. A patch of shade ripples across smooth paving stones; birdsong peeks through the hum. You feel it, an unexpected calm. Urban places can surprise us this way. They can recharge our minds, even in the heart of the city.

How do we cultivate that magic? For decades, “restorative environments” meant leafy forests, babbling streams, and weekend retreats far from noise. Yet most of us don’t have six hours to spare. We need micro-sanctuaries in our everyday routes—streets, campuses, and transit stops. That’s where urban scientists, designers, planners, and policy-makers unite, rewriting the narrative of city life from stress-machine to stress-buster.

Imagine a team of environmental psychologists poring over hundreds of photographs from six kinds of urban scenes, such as markets, parks, campuses, housing blocks, streetscapes, and transit hubs. They’re looking for clues: Which settings really restore attention? Which features spark that gentle “ahhh” of relief during a busy day? In the Philippines, over a thousand participants rated these images, each one spending sixty seconds absorbed by a single scene. The result: a lean, 17-item Urban Restorative Potential Scale (URPS for short) that measures four essential ingredients of urban calm.

First comes quality, the sense that this place is cared for. Think neat landscaping, clean benches, and even well-maintained murals. Without order, your mind can’t relax. Next is functionality: comfortable seating, sheltered walkways, and clear signage. You don’t want to fumble for shade or second-guess your route. Third is captivation: gentle fascination through textures, colors, and patterns. A well-designed façade, a playful mosaic, the way light dances through latticework. Finally, relaxation itself, often delivered by pockets of greenery, cool breezes, or the soft trickle of water.

Here’s the catch: these factors aren’t one-size-fits-all. In a leafy pocket park, quality (well-trimmed hedges and spotless paths) may be the hero. In a gritty transit plaza, robustness and shelter (functionality) take center stage. Along a university walkway, a rhythm of columns and flowering vines (captivation) might hold your wandering mind more than rows of benches. Good design knows which lever to pull.


Urban planners and designers took note. When revitalizing a tired streetscape, they didn’t just plant trees willy-nilly. They installed sturdy benches under artistic canopies, painted wayfinding murals, and tested different paving patterns until pedestrians slowed down, mindful, not rushing. Campus architects swapped sterile corridors for courtyards framed by arcades, where students now catch their breath between classes. Transit authorities revamped bus stops with transparent shelters, ergonomic seats, and bright signage that even first-time riders can read at a glance.

Policymakers, too, have a role. Zoning rules can require “restorative pockets” every few blocks—tiny plazas or pocket parks that meet URPS criteria. Infrastructure budgets can prioritize maintenance as much as expansion; after all, a cracked, weedy plaza undermines any design scheme. Public-private partnerships can fund pop-up green installations, interactive street art, or solar-shaded seating, low-cost interventions that test what works before big investments.

The story isn’t theoretical. In neighborhoods where URPS-inspired interventions went live, residents reported higher satisfaction with their daily commutes, felt less mental fatigue at the end of the day, and even engaged more with local businesses. A simple corridor upgrade on one main road resulted in a 20 percent increase in pedestrian traffic during lunch hours, proving that calm, functional, and interesting streets draw people in.

As we barrel through the twenty-first century (grappling with climate pressures, booming populations, and rapid technological change), we need cities that heal us as much as they move us. Plant-2-plate urban farms can deliver fresh produce and green respite. Networked pergolas with solar panels can power lighting, shade sidewalks, and showcase sustainable design. Digital wayfinding apps can adapt in real-time to crowd flows, guiding you through the most efficient route to your destination.

Ultimately, restoring city dwellers’ minds is a collaborative art. Researchers refine the URPS toolbox. Designers translate theory into places you can touch. Planners weave those places into a livable fabric. Policy-makers ensure the project outlives political terms. Together, they birth a new urban era—one where the city’s pulse doesn’t drain you but energizes you in unexpected, delightful ways.

Next time your day feels like a sprint, pause for a sixty-second detour. Notice the colors, the seating, and the breeze. You might discover that the urban world, far from being a flatland of stress, can be a mosaic of small, restorative moments, micro-oases that keep us sane, sharp, and surprisingly hopeful in the heart of our cities.

Architects' Exclusive Right to Sign and Seal Architectural Documents is Upheld by the Supreme Court

 In the long-running legal battle between civil engineers and architects over who has the right to prepare, sign, and seal architectural designs and documents for building construction, the nation's highest court has decided in favor of the architects. The 2004 Revised IRR of the National Building Code is legitimate and constitutional, the court ruled, and only licensed and registered architects have the exclusive right to do so. This important ruling upholds the qualifications and professional privileges of Filipino architects in practicing, duh... "architecture".., in the Philippines.

The primary questions in the case are whether civil engineers have the right to prepare, sign and seal architectural documents, such as blueprints, designs, and specifications for the construction of buildings, and whether the 2004 National Building Code (NBC) Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) that restricted this power to architects are lawful and constitutional.

The 2004 Revised IRR of the NBC is valid and consistent with the Architecture Act of 2004 (RA 9266), which regulates the practice of architecture in the Philippines, the Supreme Court ruled. Only licensed and registered architects, not civil engineers, have the exclusive authority to prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents.

These were the grounds upon which the Supreme Court based its decision:

The 2004 Revised IRR of the NBC merely put into effect the provisions of RA 9266, which specifically granted architects the exclusive right to prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents and prohibited government officials from accepting or approving any documents that were not prepared by architects. This did not exceed the rule-making authority of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Only civil or structural documents may be prepared, signed, and sealed by civil engineers, as permitted by the Civil Engineering Law (RA 544), which establishes the parameters of civil engineering practice. The other provisions of the law and the legislative intent make it clear that the term "building" in RA 544 should only be understood to refer to structures that are related to waterworks or meant for public gatherings.

Only mechanical and electrical engineers are recognized by the official version of the NBC, which is certified by the Malacañang Records Office and published in the Official Gazette, to be able to prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents. The NBC version that contained the phrase "licenced architect or civil engineer in case of architectural and structural plans," which was kept in the National Library and referenced by the Court of Appeals, was not offered or admitted as evidence in the trial court and, as a result, cannot be taken into consideration on appeal. In addition, the term was a misprint or a typo, and using it would be changing the legislation.

Because of the unbridgeable contradiction and conflict between these laws, RA 9266 has implicitly repealed or modified RA 544 and the NBC to the extent that they allow civil engineers to prepare, sign, and seal architectural documents. RA 544 and the NBC are general laws that cover a variety of professions related to building design and construction, while RA 9266 is a special law that deals specifically with the practice of architecture. Lex specialis derogat generali, which states that a special law supersedes a general law on the same subject matter, is applicable.

Since the 2004 Revised IRR of the NBC was implemented to protect the State's police authority and guarantee that only qualified professionals could prepare the necessary paperwork for a building permit, it did not infringe upon the substantive due process rights of civil engineers. Civil engineers' ability to practice their profession was not taken away by the 2004 Revised IRR of the NBC; rather, it limited their authority with regard to architectural documents. It is still, without a doubt, the exclusive right or privilege of civil engineers to prepare, sign, and seal structural or civil documents in addition to other non-architectural documents. The decision did not take away any of their rights that they were not supposed to have in the first place, which historical conditions permitted. It only gave the architects of today their rightful place and domain in the realm of the multidisciplinary professions of designing and constructing buildings.

This decision should usher in a more informed population about the roles of architects and engineers in nation-building. Gone should be the days when people took architects as just visual artists or drawing specialists and assigned the title "master builders" to civil engineers who never took any architectural design class or 2-year construction training prior to taking professional examinations. The curtains have been drawn, and the truth is out in the open, adjudicated by the ultimate arbiters of the land.

Pinoy Builders says that Bench Tower, which used low-E double glass walls to keep heat out, The Boni Tower, which used modular construction to save time and money, and Ylang Lane Townhouses are all examples of sustainable buildings in the Philippines that are also cost-effective.

Congratulations! you are about to embark on mixed emotions of joy, excitement, anxiety, and other heightened feelings through-out your project. Now you are not sure where to start or want to start somewhere so here are your guaranteed first steps.

THE PROBLEM

It is not uncommon for people to know they want to do a building project and have thought about it quite a lot – but just don’t know how best to start.

Or worst, launch into an expensive design service without establishing a relationship or worst still, not carefully establish the groundwork for the project.

The initial NEEDS AND OPTIONS REVIEW works in the same way, it will allow you to start an exploration designed to precisely understand your unique requirements and potential roadblocks, then gives:

· A Plan to move forward
· A timeline and rough Cost Estimate of what to expect

THE PROCESS

We developed this process while doing some of the most problematic projects that we had over the years. The business and process of designing typically involve a number of groups and a diverse range of people. We saw an issue in these projects of people starting design and construction BEFORE they had fully done their research and homework BEFORE they had critiqued their ideas.

We think this applies to the construction industry. It always happens in residential projects. People are trying to run before they have started walking, most often because many people even without the proper education in design and construction think they know enough and unknowingly becoming arrogant in deciding to or advising others to discount proper planning and hiring professionals. Yes it seems simple, these simple minds make for sophisticated disaster.

The foundations are the most important part of the structure of any building because everything is built on top of it, it’s very expensive to change the foundation once you have started to build upwards. But it’s very easy to change them if they still just lines on paper.

So.. we spend a little more time on the research than other people who rush their clients into designing without proper investigations, diagnostics and come up with the best courses of action to do everything right at the very outset of embarking to design and later build your project.

There are Five important steps in building your project:
  1. Needs and Options Review, the critical first step which this document is trying to advise you to do before anything else.
  2. Schematic Design Phase
  3. Detailed Architectural Design Phase
  4. Construction Documents Phase
  5. Construction Administration Phase
Below, I’ve outlined the first step – what the Needs and Options Review is.

NEEDS AND OPTIONS REVIEW

When considering building a new home, a high-level Needs and Options Review with your architect is the critical first step. Why?
  • Obtain a licensed architect’s opinion on the feasibility of the project – one who is experienced in the type of project that you now want to work on.
  • Produce an outline brief that provides the “DNA” for future work.
  • Discuss the “look and feel” of a potential scheme.
  • Prepare a sketch of a possible layout option.
  • Provide a preliminary program of the timeline.
  • Provide rough estimates ranging from bare finish to top quality finish.
  • Provide options on ways to construct or get the best price quotations from contractors.
  • Provide advice and assistance in applying for permits and funding requests.

A surgeon wouldn’t operate without a proper diagnosis. Prescription without a diagnostics is malpractice. My initial Needs and Options Review works the same way.

Five most essential things to know before deciding to design and build

You may or may not have the funds, time and an idea yet of what to build at this moment, now the question is "are you knowledgeable enough" and "patient enough" to take some time to do your homework or research into looking at the big picture of your dream and to take the first essential steps in order for your desires to start materializing? If you are willing to learn and become patient enough in realizing a huge undertaking and very expensive project such as your dream house then this article is for you.
Planning, designing, constructing, and managing projects is no easy tasks. A person becomes an architect by studying and training to become proficient with this expertise for at least seven (7) years and engineers take at least five (5) years with their respective professions, which is all you need to properly plan and design a successful project. The value that you get from professionals will pay off from the start of your project up to the useful life of your building. Of course, you can design it yourself and hire draftsman, then hire an experienced construction person but you'll get nowhere near the quality of what a team of professionals can achieve for your project. In every project you will need the combined expertise of at least four (4) professionals, foremost is your architect to coordinate with his/her overall vision of form and space the building's basic structure done by structural engineers, electrical by electrical engineers and plumbing by plumbing engineers. Other professionals are needed in more complex buildings beside a modest residential building.

If you are one of the many who are very concerned about control over how money is spent on your project and ensure proper spending, there is a way to do it. This decision however, must be made from the outset of your project and this requires you to have a licensed architect working with you, for you to reap the benefits of such a method of executing your project.

The traditional way of executing and delivering a project is through design-bid-build method where the designer or architect is a separate entity that provides the design and documentation only and a winning contractor from a bidding process to take up the construction contract. This method does not give you much of control over your project’s spending due to a separate contracting entity that will only be controlled with the terms of the contract, leaving the contractor to have more control over how to spend your money according only to agreed scope and specifications of the project.

How Much does Hiring an Architect Cost

The fee that architects charge to their clients revolves around the value that they provide as a product for their professional services. The professional service of an architect is proportional to the complexity and risk of professional liability with a project.

The Professional Regulations Board of Architecture has prescribed in their memorandum for the published 2010 Standards for Professional Practice, a schedule of recommended professional fees according to project types, for example, for a residential project the recommended fee is set at 10% of the probable construction cost, however, while these are only recommended, architects are free to charge any amount that does not go far from what is recommended. Some highly reputable architects charge insane amounts of fees due to their reputation and quality of work and many beginning architects charge the lowest to the point of under-charging and hurting their businesses just to compete in price wars with lesser quality substitutes.

Many people are surprised to learn how high architects charge compared to engineers or other non-professionals (who are practicing architecture illegally under R.A.9266), they may go as far as to judge an architect as greedy and are way over their heads, this is because the very low fee or free service providers have far more inferior or non-existent service process compared to what architects provide from a project's start to it's finish. Engineers or non-architects do not value architectural design and charge as low as they can to secure the construction contract of your project, they let you do the designs on your own or get low-paid draftsmen and hide their fees on the construction part when you already have committed to handing them your money, either they sacrifice the quality of the work or underpay workers or both to profit from your project because they didn't charge for design and other preliminary requirements to get your project.
